Travelling to Le Marche has never been easier thanks to daily flights (summer) from London Stansted to Ancona, situated on the Adriatic coast and just 50 minutes from Santo Stefano. RyanAir flies from London daily and in our experience the flights have been reliable.
When booked well in advance, flights can be very inexpensive, although the cost of changing a date or time can be high. And be very careful that you don't exceed your luggage allowance, as that can be a costly mistake.
In July and August, there are weekly flights (Saturday) from East Midlands to Rimini with RyanAir- which if you live in the north is a real bonus. The trip from Rimini to La Chiesa di Santo Stefano is about 45 minutes longer than the trip from Ancona.
Travellers who have not used RyanAir before need to be aware of the fact that there are some drawbacks. There are no seat numbers issued, so it becomes a real scramble to get on the plane if you care where you sit, unless you pay extra for priority boarding. The flights are very popular with Italians – not noted for their belief in the practice of queuing! There are no refreshments included in the price, and on board snacks and drinks are expensive.
But given that we have known flights cost as little as 1p (yes – one penny – plus taxes, of course!), and the flight is only 2 hours from Stansted, we think it is an excellent service.
If you are a long way from Stansted, you can also fly from East Midlands to Rimini, which is just 45 minutes further north than Ancona. These flights are on Saturdays only in 2010.
If you prefer a more traditional airline, Lufthansa flies to Ancona via Munich, and Alitalia via Rome and Milan. See our Links section for details of all the above websites. And of course, there are regular flights from many airports to Rome (about 3 hours away) and Bologna (also about 3 hours).
For those who are interested in travelling in the ultimate in style, you might want to consider private jet hire. Please contact us if this would be of interest, and we can put you in contact with a suitable company.
Many of our events and special interest holidays include airport transfers, but for other guests or those who want the freedom to explore the area, cars can be hired via the RyanAir website from Hertz. Other rental companies can be accessed via our Links page, and there are some that offer an exceptionally competitive price.
We can also arrange for taxis to and from the airport with sufficient notice.
Once you have arrived in Italy, you will need directions to get to Santo Stefano, and we have a full set of downloads with instructions and maps available on the site.
